Michael Volle (*1960) is one of the most internationally renowned baritone singers. The singer, who comes from southern Germany, was a permanent ensemble member of Zurich Opera House from 1999 to 2007 and subsequently moved to the Bavarian State Opera (until 2012). To this day he is a regular guest in both houses. Further guest engagements have taken Volle to the leading opera and festival stages, including the Salzburg Easter Festival/Festival, the Bayreuth Festival, the Vienna State Opera, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House in London, the New York Met as well as the Deutsche Oper and the Berlin State Opera. Full role repertoire includes numerous title and leading roles, including the parts of Beckmesser and Hans Sachs (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Wolfram (Tannhäuser), Graf Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Marcello (La bohème), Guillaume Tell, Amonasro (Aida), Wozzeck, Jochanaan (Salome), Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde), Wotan and Scarpia (Tosca). In addition to his work on the opera stage, Michael Volle is also active as a lieder and concert singer. In the course of his engagements Volle has worked with conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Bernard Haitink, Philippe Herreweghe, Mariss Jansons, Valery Gergiev, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Antonio Pappano and Franz Welser-Möst.

"Tosca" was first performed on January 14, 1900 at the Teatro Costanzi, now the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, symbolically on the spot. The evening was a major social event, and in addition to the Prime Minister and the Queen, the composers Pietro Mascagni and Francesco Cilea were also present. With his "Tosca" Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) entered a new century and, with his highly theatrical and effective scenes, he committed himself to Verist opera on the one hand and to the tragic-heroic grand opera on the other. After seeing the drama of the same name by Victorien Sardous, which was a huge international success with Sarah Bernhardt in the leading role, the composer successfully applied to Sardou for the rights to create a libretto. The wealth of musical ideas (more than 60 themes appear as leitmotifs) and the breathless sequence of events are largely responsible for the immense tension and drama of the opera. By focusing on the main character, the work is considered a "prima donna opera" par excellence. Although it has always been suspected that a historical figure is behind Tosca, the characters and plot are freely invented. However, the background against which the plot unfolds is historically determined by the Second Coalition War and the Battle of Marengo in 1800 between French and Austrian troops. Napoleon’s supposed defeat and his final victory over the coalition troops are reported in the first and second act of the opera. Today "Tosca" is one of the most popular and most performed operas of all.

Tenor Jonas Kaufmann was born on July 10, 1969 in Munich. He learned to play the piano at the age of 8, encouraged by his father and grandfather who passed on to him their passion for classical music, Wagner and singing. Jonas Kaufmann also frequently attended the Munich Opera from an early age and joined his school choir. He then embarked on studies of mathematics, which he abandoned to join, in 1989, the Academy of Music and Theater in Munich. Jonas Kaufmann gets his first important role at the Regensburg Opera where he is Caramello in A Night in Venice by Johann Strauss. Jonas Kaufmann then met Helmut Deutsch who guided him in his vocal development and still accompanies him today on the piano in his recitals. It was during the 2000s that his international career took off with his appearances in particular at the Chicago Opera, the Salzburg Festival, the La Monnaie Theater, Covent Garden, the Zurich Opera, the Staatsoper in Vienna, Munich, La Scala, New York Metropolitan Opera and the Bayreuth Festival. Comfortable in all repertoires, he then became one of the most popular tenors on the international scene.

Baritone Ludovic Tézier was born on September 10, 1968 in Marseille into a music-loving family. He developed a passion for opera very early on, and for Wagner in particular. Ludovic Tézier joined the Center national des Artistes Lyriques then the Lyric Art School of the Paris Opera. Ludovic Tézier began his career in 1992 on the stage of the Grand Théâtre de Genève, where he performed Pompeo in Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini. Speaking four languages, including Russian, Ludovic Tézier approaches with ease the most varied composers: from Mozart to Indy, via Verdi, Massenet or Tchaikovski.
